for most of us, VLC is one of the best and most used media players that play everything thrown at it without much hiccups and worrying about codec. But besides running all your favourite movies and GOT series that you have downloaded, VLC is capable of performing a lot of other things too that you might be unaware of.
In this post we will explore the list of things that VLC is capable of indulging apart from playing videos:
VLC Can Rip DVDs:
VLC Player comes with a basic DVD ripper, which I am sure not most of us use or are even are of its existence. You might barely use the VLC Ripper because of the availability of better DVD rippers; but you will be glad to know that the VLC DVD Ripper to help you get a decent quality DVD Rip. All you need to do is:
- Go to the Media menu and
- Choose Convert/Save
- Click on the Disc tab to select for more DVD or Audio ripping options
- Adjust the Starting Position
- Select the Convert (Alt+S) instead of Play or Stream
- Choose the required output format, select the Destination File and Click on Start
Record videos with VLC
You can also record videos during playback in VLC Player. The record button is not visible when you install the VLC Player, its hidden by default. All you need to do is:
- Click on View Tab
- Select Advanced Control
- A Red Button will appear under the seek bar to left
- Click on it to start recording and clicking again will stop the recording
Experience VLC with ASCII mode:
VLC Media Player can be fun sometime. It is capable of playing movies in ASCII Mode too. You can enable the ACSII Mode through:
- Go to Tools and Select Preferences
- Click on Video Option and select Color ASCII Art Video Output from dropdown menu
- Hit on Save and open a video file to enjoy the ASCII art
Convert Audio and Video formats:
VLC can also be used to convert audio and video files from one format to another. To convert the files, you need to go to:
- Click on Media Tab
- Select Convert
- Click on Add button to select the file you want to convert
- Now click on Convert
- Select the output format from Profile and file location from Destination File
- Click on Start to begin conversion
Take a Snapshot
Did you love a scene from a certain video while watching it on VLC and want to share it on your social networking space? Why not take a snapshot? If you are unaware of this, there is an application called as Snapshot in VLC Media Player. There are three ways to take a snapshot in VLC.
- Go to the Video Menu and click on Take Snapshot
- Also, you can click on View Menu located at the top and select Advanced Controls. Just like record button, we discussed earlier, a camera icon will appear below the seek bar that helps in taking snapshot
- Else, the easiest method to take snapshot is by pressing Shift + S
Download YouTube and online videos from VLC:
There are different sources to download YouTube and other online videos available on Google. Likewise, VLC Media Player too can download your favorite online videos. You need to first copy the URL of video from YouTube video page.
- Now go to Media and Open Network Stream
- Paste the copied URL in the bar and hit on Play
- As soon as VLC starts streaming the content, click on Tools
- Select Codec Information and copy the URL given in a Location box at the bottom
- Paste the URL from Location Box to browser’s address bar. Once the video starts streaming, save it on your computer’s hard disk
