Apple WatchKit Software Tools Now Available for Developers

Developers can create notifications that allow users to take action or respond right from their wrist, such as turning the lights off after they’ve left the house, quickly accessing flight details at the airport, and rerouting their transit when a train or bus is late. Developers can incorporate Glances, which quickly show users information they care about most, such as the latest news and sports scores, alarm system status, or the next step of a favorite recipe. With this WatchKit developers can begin developing WatchKit apps, actionable notifications, and Glances, for timely information accessible by an easy, quick look at Apple Watch before the Watch becomes available.  The company also revealed the screen resolutions for both Apple Watch models – 38mm and 42mm in the SDK
Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing in a statement said “Apple Watch is our most personal device ever, and WatchKit provides the incredible iOS developer community with the tools they need to create exciting new experiences right on your wrist.” He added “With the iOS 8.2 beta SDK, developers can now start using WatchKit to create breakthrough new apps, Glances and actionable notifications designed for the innovative Apple Watch interface and work with new technologies such as Force Touch, Digital Crown, and Taptic Engine.”
Besides announcing the new WatchKit SDK for developers, Apple also launched a microsite with more details about Apple Watch. The site reads “WatchKit apps have two parts: A WatchKit extension that runs on iPhone and a set of user interface resources that are installed on Apple Watch. When your app is launched on Apple Watch, the WatchKit extension on iPhone runs in the background to update the user interface and respond to user interactions.”
Apple in a statement notes that iOS 8.2 SDK beta including WatchKit is available immediately for iOS at developer.apple.com/watchkit.
MacRumors citing Apple’s human interface guidelines reports that two versions of Apple Watch will come with different resolutions. The 38mm Apple Watch is said to come with a resolution of 272×340 pixels, while the 42mm Apple Watch will come with a resolution of 312×390 pixels. The report also says that apples watch will feature Retina display; the company asked the developers to use 2x image assets.
